Hitting F12 on IE8 it should start the Developer Tools that allows you to emulate IE7 (not IE6) using the Browser Mode. I suppose on IE9 you will be able to emulate back at least until IE7, but I'm only supposing because now it irritates me the simple idea to have to buy W7 in order to test this. UPDATE: as specified by Jeff Atwood: IE9 emulates back until IE7 too. UPDATE 2: as suggested by Nick in comments below, if you want to be 100% sure to emulate the old IE browsers you can use (incredibly they are also provided for free). As a side note, keep in mind that testing on VMs is more time consuming than using IE Developer Tools, IMHO VMs testing might be worth when testing something that's JS/CSS greedy like a web app or a complex website, not for simple sites that use jQuery and some CSS.

+1 - What perfect timing! An hour of my time was lost forever as I searched the entire company for someone still stuck in 2007 using IE7. Then it took a good 30 minutes to get a screen share with her so we could verify she was actually using IE7 and not IE8. Now, instead of installing Windows XP and IE7 on a VMWare image to fix my bug, I'll use your seemingly obvious, simplistic solution that has for so long seemed to escape my vision;) How could I have missed this?

– Mar 19 '11 at 2:53. @Saif Bechan: there could be certaintly differencies considering the thousands of updates released continuosily by Microsoft for both their browsers and their Operative Systems. But think at the other possibilities to test IE: you would have to install 3 VM with Windows, one for IE7, one or IE8, and one for IE9.

But also those testing environments might still be different from the final users environments that probably have installed (or have not installed) some Windows/IE/Office updates that you have not installed. – Dec 22 '11 at 18:18. If you just want to check the design of your web pages on different IE browsers, try or WebPageTest. Is basically a free performance testing tool but if you select the 'Visual Comparison' tab from their & submit a URL to test, the site generates expandable thumbnails of ' view of your web page and optionally a video of that webpage while it was loading. Is an open source tool that you can install locally & run your own instance. WebPagetest lets you test in IE versions 6 to 9.

If you want to manually test the navigation & features of your site and not just the design & layout, install the freely available on your Win 7 PC. If you're alright with simply a visual check, you can use Adobe's. It's part of the CS Live suite of online services offered by Adobe. Right now you can get 12 months free membership of CS Live, so in the short term it's a good free solution. You can run tests on multiple browser/OS combinations simultaneously and see the rendering differences by comparing them side-by-side. However, it's always best to have actual test machines (or VMs), as Browserlab can't tell you if the JavaScript is broken or help you debug CSS or markup errors. It will only tell you that the layout isn't rendering properly in a particular platform.

But it's nice to be able to type in a URL an get full-size screenshots of the webpage on most major OS/browser combinations in an instant.

Mirror For Samsung Tv Mac Not Working

I purchased the Flex fridge RF28M9580SG/AA and a Samsung MU7000F Smart TV for the specific purpose of mirroring the TV on the fridge. It has been a complete exercise in futility. I put the TV in the kitchen with the fridge and put them both on the same wifi network and bandwith and all the happens is the fridge is stuck in a loop looking for the TV. I have reset the Family Hub and reinstalled everything to no avail. I called tech support and I was informed that the TV can only mirror to a handheld device using Smart View. I was transferred from TV tech support to the appliance tech support and the rep was clueless as to the functionality of the new model. I was told that it was very unlikely that the fridge could mirror a TV.

All; Audio Driver; LG TV; Pricing; Router settings; Samsung TV; Sony TV; Technical; iPhone / iPad; Mac. Screen Mirroring does not work on my Sony TV with Android OS. How to redeem a promo code in Mac App store. Mirror for Samsung TVworks on any Samsung Smart TV from the 2012 models onward. Which model year do you have? Which model year do you have? You can see that by looking at the middle letter in your model type (on the back of your Samsung TV).

Also, the Smart Home app is no longer usable on the fridge and has been replaced by the Samsung Connect app but that app is unaavailable to download to the fridge. All other apps in the Family Hub work fine. Need some help! Is samsung working on a solution for line of sight only for tv mirroring (sort of defeats the idea if I can see the tv from the frig) - just bought a new samsung tv to support this function only to find out after the fact that it relies on line of sight and not the wifi network.

It finds the tv but just spins - chatted with tech support and he apologized but offered no hope of resolution - with the hub v2 RF22M9581SG being on the network and a google home next to it - I would think a software patch should be in order - the advertising of this feature is misleading. I'm having the same issue, and it is infuriating! I will make it my goal to post negative reviews exposing this engineering flaw everywhere this product is sold! This was one dumb engineering idea.

What a horrible marketing ploy. It totally defeats the purpose of being able to mirror tv, if both devices have to have line of sigh-really defeats the purpose. What moron came up with that idea?!

My TV is attached to the wall literally around the corner from the fridge and it won't connect. What an insignificant feature for a 'smart refrigerator'. After MONTHS of dealing with Samsung phone support this issue was finally kicked up to a Tier 2 support ticket. Needless to say the Samsung tech showed up and thoufght the TV mirroring app worked via Bluetooth. Need I say more.

Just to be safe I had the TV in the kitchen next to the fridge. The tech tried the allk of same connection protocols that I had tried with Samsung phone support and guess what? Nothing worked. So the tech decided to call another tech that specialized in TVs. Nothing they tried between the two of them worked, basically all repeats of things that I had tried and been through to no avail.

Well the tech got desparate and we started going through each menu item page by page. So we are in the main Settings menu and we navigate to the on-line manual. Well in the on-line manual there is also a Settings menu. We clicked on it and then clicked on the Content menu. In the Content menu Java and pop up windows are OFF by default. So we set the pop up menu to ALLOW pop ups and OMG the TV Mirroring app worked! 3 months of utter frustration trying to get the TV Mirroring to work and this undocumented toggle button was the culprit.

Mac

The tech said, 'Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!' Oh, but things do not end here.

I moved the TV back to the den (the room next to the kitchen) and now the TV Mirroring does not work AGAIN! Well it seems the fridge uses some kind of rinky dink crap called WiFi Direct. And this WiFi Direct is only good up to 49 feet DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT!

Who thought this through. If I had a TV direct line of sight in the kitchen I wouldn't need to mirror a TV.

Now I have a brand new Samsung fridge AND a new Samsung TV which are absolutely useless with each other. VERY deceptive advertising on Samsung's part. As I had a perfectly good TV before I went to return the TV to Best Buy and discussed the issue of the WiFi vs WiFi Direct non disclosure during the sale. The whole mess is being kicked up to the Best Buy District Manager. I'm sure the Samsung rep for the store will be of no help because when my salesman contacted the rep in the middle of this whole situation for some help, his response was, Call 1-800-SAMSUNG. And to make things worse, I bought a whole kitchen of new Samsung WiFi ish enabled appliances, refrigerator, double oven, 2 dishwashers and a microwave all in the new Black Stainless Steel. Another dirty WiFi secret of Samsung's is that not all appliances use the same Samsung App for communication and integration.

Some use an app called Samsung Connect and others use Samsung Smart Home and not all of the appliances can be viewed in the Family Hub App. I had to make two separate accounts, figure out which appliance went with which app. My advice is to AVOID all Samsung WiFi enabled appliances until they get it together. I guess it's the price you pay for being an early adopter. Needless to say I cannot recommend these products or give them even an 'average' review.

Best Productivity Software For Mac

Our Pick for Best Productivity and Task-Management App Is Things 3 After a lot of deliberation, our choice for the best GTD product for Apple users is Things from the team at Cultured Code. The launch of Things 3 in 2017 was a complete rebuild, and it is one of the most pleasing and satisfying pieces of software I’ve ever used. Check out these best productivity apps for Mac. As TimeCamp team’s goal is to always keep you informed, in today’s article we’ll take a look at Mac. As a software for time tracking, we know that the market is full of varied options, applications, and tools.

Computers are meant to make our work more productive, saving us time and effort. Unfortunately, we don't always get the most of them — they can be frustrating, distracting, and even create additional work. But it doesn't have to be that way! The best path to productivity is to put together a suite of apps that meet your needs, work together, and fit you like a glove. One solution won't fit everyone.

The work you do varies from person to person, and so does the way you approach it. The apps that make me productive may frustrate you. Some prefer easy-to-use tools that smooth your workflow, while others favor complex tools that take time to set up but save time in the long run.

The choice is yours. In this review, we'll look at what it takes for an app to make you more productive. We'll introduce you to some of our favorites, as well as apps that come highly recommended by people we trust. Many of the apps we cover deserve a place on every Mac.

Sometimes the best way to boost your productivity is to switch up your tools. Work smarter, not harder. So read this review carefully, identify the tools that look most promising to you, and give them a go! My name is Adrian, and I often have a lot on my plate.

I rely on my computers and devices to get work done and expect them to ease my burden, not add to it. I'm always on the lookout for tools that let me get accomplish better quality results while using less effort. Like you, a lot of my life is digital, whether it's writing articles on my Macs, reading on my iPad, listening to music and podcasts on my iPhone, or tracking my rides with Strava. For the last few decades, I've been putting together a constantly evolving combination of software to make it all happen smoothly, efficiently and effectively. In this article, I'll introduce you to high-quality software tools that will help you do the same. Some I use, and others I respect.

Your job is to find the ones that will keep you productive and make you smile. Can an App Really Make You More Productive? How can an app make you more productive?

Quite a number of ways. Here are a few: Some apps enable you to work more efficiently. They include smart features and smooth workflows that enable you to complete your work in less time and effort, or at higher quality, than other apps. Some apps place what you need right at your fingertips.

They give you easy access to what you need by anticipating your needs and meeting them creatively, whether that's a phone number to dial, a file that you need, or some other pertinent information. Some apps let you manage and track your time so there is less wasted. They motivate you, show you where you spend and waste time, show you what's next, and save your health by encouraging sensible breaks when you need and deserve them. Some apps remove distractions and keep you focused.

They take time-wasters out of your field of view, keep your gaze on the task at hand, and motivate you away from distraction and procrastination. Some apps take the work off your hands, and delegate it to your computer through automation. They save you from having to do small jobs, and even if you're only saving a few minutes or seconds each time, it all adds up! Automation apps can file your documents where they belong, type long phrases and passages for you, and perform complex combinations of tasks automatically.

Your imagination is the only limit. Some apps optimize your digital workspace so it becomes a friction-free environment that fits you like a glove. They take your favorite parts of the Mac user interface and put them on steroids. They make the experience of using your computer smoother and quicker. Who Needs Another Productivity App? The perfect new app is like a breath of fresh air.

Discovering a few apps that work together smoothly and seamlessly is a revelation. It's rewarding to have a carefully collated suite of software that's constantly evolving, so that year-by-year you're aware of increasing productivity. But don't go overboard! Don't spend so much time looking at new apps that you don't get any work done.

Your effort needs to have a payoff in time and effort saved, or an increase in the quality of your work. Hopefully, this article will save you some of the time you would have spent searching. We've been careful to include only quality apps that are worth the effort of downloading, paying for, and using.

That's not to say you should use all of them. Start with a few that meet a current need, or look like they will enhance your workflow.

Some of the apps are premium products that come with a premium price. They are recommended. We also give you alternatives that are less expensive, and where possible, free. Finally, I need to mention, a software subscription service. Many of the apps and app categories you'll find in this article are included in a Setapp subscription. Paying ten dollars a month for may make sense when you add up the total cost of purchasing them all. Use Apps that Enable You to Work Efficiently When you think of the word 'productivity', you might think of getting through all the tasks they need to accomplish, and doing it well.

You may also think of doing it efficiently, so the same work is done in less time, or with less effort. Work smarter, not harder. Start with the apps you need to do your work. Carefully Choose Your Work-Related Apps You're going to need more than one app to get it all done, and those apps will vary depending on the sort of work you do, and your own personal preferences. You'll need to find the right combination of apps, that work together in a way that's more effective than the way that they work separately. So your search will begin not with 'productivity apps', but apps that let you do your actual work, productively. The apps you need vary from person to person, and you may find what you need in one of the following unbiased reviews:.

Besides industry-specific software, there are a few app categories that can help most people work productively. Most of us need an app to store our thoughts and reference information, and many can benefit from brainstorming software.

Capture Your Thoughts and Access Your Notes Most of us need to capture our thoughts, store reference information, and find the right note quickly. Comes preinstalled on your Mac, and does a great job. It lets you capture quick thoughts, create formatted notes with tables, organize them in folders, and sync them between our computers and devices. But some of us need more. If you spend some of your day on a Windows computer you'll value a cross-platform app, or you might be hungry for features that Notes doesn't offer.

(from $89.99/year) is popular. It can manage a huge number of notes (around 20,000 in my case), runs on most platforms, offers both folders and tags for structure, and has a fast and powerful search feature. And are free alternatives with different interfaces and approaches. If you're after something that looks and feels more like a Mac app, (free) has been a favorite for many years but is overdue for an update. ($1.49/month) is the new (award-winning) kid on the block, and my current favorite.

It looks beautiful and is very functional without getting overly complicated. Jump Start Your Brain and Visualize Your Work Whether you're writing a blog post, planning an important project, or solving a problem, it's often hard to get started. It's helpful to brainstorm in a visual way, engaging the creative right-hand side of your brain. I do that best by mind-mapping and outlining — sometimes on paper, but often using an app. Mind maps are very visual. You start with a central thought, and work out from there. I got started with (free), and have added a few more favorites to my Dock:.

($39.99). ($49.99).

($27.99, $129 Pro). Outlines offer a similar structure to a mind map, but in a more linear format that can be used as the basis for a document.

It's usually possible to move your mind-mapping ideas into an outline by the export and import of a standard OPML file. ($9.99, $59.99 Pro) is arguably the most powerful outliner for Mac. I use it to keep track of complex projects, and I'll often start outlining an article there. It features complex styling, columns, and a distraction-free mode. ($9.99) is a little less powerful, but stores your outlines in Evernote as separate notes.

For me, that's a killer feature. Use Apps that Give You Easy Access to What You Need The average person wastes ten minutes a day looking for misplaced items — keys, phones, wallets, and the constantly hiding TV remote. That's almost three days a year! That same unproductive behavior can carry over to the way we use our computers and devices, searching for lost files, phone numbers, and passwords.

So one huge way you can become more productive is to use apps that help you find it quickly when you need it. Find Contact Details Quickly Start with the people you keep in touch with.

One app most of us need is a contacts app to keep track of phone numbers, addresses and other information about the people you connect with. You'll probably do most of that on your phone, but it's helpful if the information syncs to your Mac as well, especially since you can use Spotlight to quickly find the details. Your Mac comes with a Contacts app that's pretty basic, but it does everything most people need, and syncs to your iPhone. If you need more, there are plenty of alternatives. Ideally, they'll sync to your Contacts app so you have the same information everywhere and on every device.

If you regularly schedule meetings, it can help to use a contact manager that integrates closely with your calendar. It's all about finding productivity apps that work well together.

Popular calendar developers agree:. ($49.99) is created by Busymac, the creators of BusyCal. ($19.99) is created by Flexibits, the developers of Fantastical.

($9.99) is another popular app that works as a standard, scientific and financial calculator. Organize and Find Your Files and Documents File managers let us keep our files and documents in a meaningful organizational structure, keeping related information together in one place, and allowing us to find and open what we need quickly. These days I manage files less than ever since many of my documents are kept in databases in apps like Ulysses, Bear, and Photos. When I need to deal with actual files, I normally turn to Apple's Finder. Another popular option that works on both Mac and iOS is ($14.99).

Securely Manage Your Passwords To stay secure these days, you need to use a different long password for every website. That can be hard to remember, and frustrating to type. And you don't want to store all of those passwords insecurely on the back of an envelope, or in a spreadsheet on your hard drive.

A good password manager will solve all these problems. Apple includes in macOS, and it's a reasonable password manager that syncs across all your Macs and iOS devices. While it's suitable for most users, and probably the best free solution, it's not perfect.

The passwords it suggests are not the most secure, and accessing the settings is a little fiddly. Is arguably the best password manager out there. Although it's a free download from the Mac App Store, the app comes with subscription pricing — $2.99/month for individuals, $4.99/month for five family members, and business plans are also available. Besides documents, you can also store 1 GB of documents securely.

If you're not a fan of subscriptions, check out. You can try it out for free with up to ten passwords, and you can unlock the app with a $19.99 in-app purchase. Search for Anything! Being able to quickly search for documents and find them is a huge boost to your productivity. Apple has included Spotlight, a comprehensive search app, since 2005.

Just click the magnifying glass icon on the menu bar or type Command-Space, and you can quickly find any document on your hard drive by typing in a few words from the title or contents of that document. If you're a Mac power user, you're probably already using an app launcher like Alfred and LaunchBar, and we'll cover them later in this review. These apps include comprehensive, customizable search functions, and offer the most powerful way to find files on your computer quickly. Use Apps that Manage and Track Your Time Productive people manage their time well. They are aware of the meetings and appointments they have coming up, and also block out time to spend on important projects. They track their time so they know what to charge clients and identify where time is being wasted, or too much time is being spent on certain tasks.

Timers can also be used to keep you focused. The developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 80s helps you to maintain focus by working in 25-minute intervals followed by five-minute breaks.

Besides cutting down on interruptions, this practice is also good for our health. We'll cover Pomodoro timers in the next section. Manage Your Tasks and Projects Time management starts with task management, where you work out the most important things to spend your time on. We've already reviewed, and it's worth reading carefully to select the best tool for you. Powerful apps like Things 3 and OmniFocus let you organize your own tasks.

Flexible apps like Wunderlist, Reminders, and Asana let you organize your team. More complex projects can be planned with project management software, which are tools that help you carefully calculate the deadlines and resources needed to finish a large project.

($149.99, Pro $299) may well be the best project management software for Mac. A second option is ($50), which brings many project management features into an app that can manage your tasks, files, and notes. Track How You Spend Your Time Time Tracking apps can help you be more productive by making you aware of the apps and behaviors that waste your time. They may also track time spent on projects so you can more accurately bill your clients. ($29, Pro $49, Expert $79) automatically tracks the time you spend on everything. It observes how you use your Mac (including which apps you use and which websites you visit) and categorizes how you spend your time, displaying it all on helpful graphs and charts. Another developer offers two apps that work together, (39 euros), a full-featured work time tracker for your business, and (free), a simple menu bar app for tracking your app usage.

Finally, (free solo, $5.25 Basic, $7.50 Pro) can track the time of your whole team, including computer activities, productivity monitoring, and attendance tracking. Clocks and Calendars Apple helpfully puts a clock at the top right of your screen, and can optionally display the date. I look at it often. What more do you need? ($18) replaces the Apple clock with something much handier.

It doesn't just display the time, clicking on it offers additional resources. Clicking the time will show you the local time anywhere in the world, and clicking the date will display a handy calendar. Other features include a stopwatch, countdown timer, hourly chimes, moon phases, and basic alarms for any date and time. If you'd like to use your Mac as a full-featured alarm clock, check out. If you're in contact with others around the world, you'll appreciate (free). It not only displays the current time of cities around the world, but you can scroll forward to any date or time to find the right time elsewhere.

Perfect for scheduling Skype calls and webinars. Apple also provides a calendar app that syncs with iOS and offers enough features to keep most people happy. But if calendars are an important part of your work, you may value an app that makes it quicker to add new events and appointments, and offers more features and integration with other apps. Two favorites are by BusyMac and Flexibits, both costing $49.99 from the Mac App Store. BusyCal's focus is on powerful features, and Fantastical's strength is the ability to use natural language to enter your events. Both are very popular, and competition between these popular apps means that they introduce new features in each new version. On the other hand, if you value a more minimalistic calendar, then ($4.99) and (free) are both worth looking at.

Use Apps that Keep You Focused We've already mentioned using a Pomodoro timer to keep you focused on your work, and we'll introduce you to some helpful apps in this section. That's just one way to maintain your focus, and other apps offer different strategies. The trouble with a Mac — especially one with a large screen — is that everything is right there in front of you, distracting you from the task at hand. Wouldn't it be great if you could fade out the windows you're not using so they're not screaming for your attention? And if you lack willpower, you may even need your computer to block access to distracting apps and websites. Stay Focused in Short Bursts Pomodoro apps use timers to encourage you to focus on your work.

It's easier to work consistently for 25 minutes then have a quick break than sit there for hours without an end in sight. And getting away from your desk at regular intervals is good for your eyes, fingers, and back.

(free) is a good free way to get started. It's a simple focus timer that lives in your menu bar and times your 25-minute (configurable) work sessions, as well as your breaks. A with more features is available for $4.99. Other options are available with more features. (free, with options to support development) reminds you to take breaks on regular basis, but can also track your activity, and display graphs if the apps you've used, as well as the time you spent away from your Mac. ($24.99) offers the most features, and structures your work into short bursts of distraction-free, highly-focused activity, alternating with opportunities for 'renewal, reflection, and intuition'.

It helps you to define clear objectives, and slice up daunting tasks into smaller slices for optimal performance. Helpful charts let you see your progress and find your rhythm day by day and hour by hour.

Best Productivity Software For Mac

It includes audio to block out noise or create the right mood, and can automatically close distracting apps for you. Fade Out Distracting Windows ($7.99) turns down distractions so you can focus on your current task by highlighting the front window and fading out all the background windows. Your focus automatically goes where it is meant to, and it's great for working at night, too. A free alternative is (donationware). It hides application windows that have been inactive for a certain period of time, leaving your mind focused on what you're actually working on.

Block Distracting Apps and Websites Another source of distraction is our constant connection to the internet, and the instant access it gives us to news and social networking sites. ($24.99, Team $99.99) will block distracting apps and websites, helping you stay on task. Is a good free alternative. ($6.00/month, $129 forever) does something similar, but syncs across Mac, Windows, and iOS to block distractions from every computer and device. Besides individual websites, it can also block the whole internet, as well as apps you find distracting. It comes with advanced scheduling, and can lock itself in so that you can't disable it when your willpower is especially weak.

Use Apps that Automate Your Work When you have too much to do, delegate — share your workload with others. Have you ever considered delegating work to your computer? Automation apps allow you to do just that. Automate Your Typing The easiest way to get started is to automate your typing. Even a fast typist can save a lot of time here, and as a cute feature, ($3.33/month, Team $7.96/month) keeps track of this for you, and can give you a report of how many days or hours you have saved since you started using the app.

TextExpander is the best known and most powerful of these apps, and is triggered when you type in a few unique characters, which it expands to a long sentence, paragraph, or even complete document. These 'snippets' can be personalized with custom fields and pop-up forms, making it even more versatile. If you're not a fan of subscription pricing, there are alternatives. In fact, you can create expandable snippets using macOS's — it's just a little fiddly to access. Under the 'Text' tab in your keyboard preferences, you can define snippets of text that you type, as well as the text that snippet is replaced with.

Automate Everything If all of this automation appeals to you, you'll definitely want to check out ($36), my favorite in this section. It's a powerful tool that can do most automation tasks, and if you set it up well, is able to replace many of the apps we mention in this review. Your imagination is the only limit. If you're a power user, this could be your ultimate app.

It can save you a ton of time and effort by covering tasks like these:. launching applications,.

text expansion,. clipboard history,. manipulating windows,.

Best Productivity Software For Mac Os

file actions,. providing menus and buttons,. floating toolbar palettes,. recording macros,.

custom notifications,. and plenty more. Finally, if you love having your work happen automatically, consider automating your online life as well. The web services ('if this then that') and are the place to make that happen. Use Apps that Optimize Your Digital Workspace macOS includes helpful user interface elements to smooth your workflow and enable you to work more efficiently.

You can launch apps from the Dock or Spotlight, display multiple apps on the screen in windows, and work on different tasks in different Spaces, or virtual screens. One way to boost your productivity is to learn how to make the most of these features.

Another is to turbocharge them with more powerful apps. Powerful Ways to Launch Your Apps and More Launchers are convenient ways of running apps, but do a lot more, like search and automation. If you learn to harness the power of the right launcher, it will become the hub of everything you do on your Mac. Is a great example, and my personal favorite. It looks like Spotlight on the surface, but there's an amazing amount of complexity under the hood.

It boosts your efficiency with hotkeys, keywords, text expansion, search and custom actions. Although it's a free download, you really need the 19 GBP Powerpack to make the most of it. ($29, family $49) is similar. Like Alfred, it's a great way to get things done if you like to keep your fingers on the keyboard. Both of these apps take over Spotlight's Command-Space hotkey (or a different one if you prefer), then you just start typing. Launchbar can launch your apps (and documents), access your events, reminders, and contacts, manage your files, search for information, and keep a history of your clipboard. You just need one of these launcher apps, and if you learn to master it, and your productivity can go through the roof.

If you're after a free alternative, consider, the app that started it all. Organize Workspaces on Different Virtual Screens I love using multiple (virtual screens, additional desktops) as I work, and switch between them with four-finger left and right swipes. A four-finger upward gesture will show me all of my Spaces on one screen. This allows me to organize the work I'm doing for different tasks on different screens, and switch quickly between them. If you don't use Spaces, give it a try. If you want even more control, here are a couple of apps you should consider. ($9.99) allows you not only to switch to a new workspace, but also automatically opens all the apps you'll need for that task.

It remembers where each window goes, so you can stay more focused when working on multiple projects. If you'd rather manage your windows for free, is a reasonable alternative. More Tweaks to Your User Interface We'll finish our productivity roundup with a few apps that can make you more productive with various user interface tweaks. ($9.99) saves you time by automatically displaying actions every time you select text, a little like what happens on iOS.

You can instantly cut, copy or paste text, search or check spelling, or customize the menu with 171 free extensions which integrate with other apps and add advanced options.

Edward Mendelson The Best Office Suites of 2018 Everyone knows Microsoft Office, but it's not your only choice for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. These office suites are tops, whether you want local or cloud-based office functionality. The Prime Productivity Tool Once upon a time, an office suite was a cluster of rooms in a brick-and-mortar building in which people gathered on weekdays to type letters, hold meetings, calculate earnings, and design advertisements. Today, an office suite is a batch of on your desktop, laptop, or mobile device where you do all those things, either alone or in collaboration with other people doing similar things on their own devices. You're likely to do them at any hour of the day or night, wherever you happen to be. You've lost the water cooler, but, overall, you've probably gained in efficiency. Microsoft Office, whether installed as a standalone set of apps or as part of the subscription-based Office 365 service, is the colossus of office suites, one that much of the world uses by default.

That doesn't mean that Office is necessarily the best suite for your specific purposes, so PCMag.com recently surveyed both Office and its major rivals from Apple, Google, Corel, and the Document Foundation. Some of these alternatives are free. Some, like Office itself, are more or less expensive depending on the version you choose. Some are resident only on your hard disk, others live partly or wholly in the cloud. If you're curious about alternatives to Microsoft Office, read on. Three apps remain the core of every office suite, whether it comes from Microsoft of not. At base, an office suite is made up of a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation app.

Depending on the suite, and in some cases depending on which version of a suite you choose, you also get a mail and calendar app, a database manager, PDF editing software, a note-taking app, and any of a dozen miscellaneous apps and services ranging from web conferencing through form-building. Some suites have morphed into online services, so Microsoft Office exists both as the familiar desktop Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps and as a subscription-based Office 365 service that comes in variously priced plans that include web-based features like real-time collaboration, online storage, and video conferencing.

What You Get in an Office Suite One thing that all of today's suites have in common is that their core apps—the word processors, spreadsheets, and —share a lot of their underlying code, so that, for example, the drawing tools in the presentation app are typically also available in reduced form in the word processor and spreadsheet. Also, the core apps typically share a similar interface, so you can move from one to the other without having to learn where to find basic features. For better or worse—and I think, on the whole, it's mostly for the better—Microsoft Office sets the standard for all other office suites, and all other suites let you save documents in Office's file formats.

Every other suite on the market offers special advantages that Office itself can't provide. The Document Foundation's LibreOffice, for example, is fully open-source, so security-conscious users can be confident that their office apps aren't sharing data with Microsoft, Apple, or anyone else. Google's commercial G Suite and the free Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides keep all your documents in the cloud, which may be an advantage if you're always on the road, but a disadvantage if you want the editing power of a desktop app like Word or Excel.

You can download Google's documents in standard formats like those used by Microsoft Office or LibreOffice, but the originals are always in the cloud and (with some special exceptions) can only be edited in Google's browser-based and mobile-app interface. Here are the basics of today's major suites. With Microsoft Office and Office 365, you get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, and miscellaneous other features; some versions include the Access database manager, the Publisher desktop-publishing package, and even Visio. Office for the Mac includes slightly different versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, but no counterpart to Access or Publisher. When you buy Microsoft Office, for either Windows or the Mac, you get the version that's current when you buy it, with occasional free updates to any future major version, and it only gets updated with security updates from Windows Update, not with new features. When you subscribe to Office 365, your copies of the office apps are automatically updated with new features every three months, and you don't have to pay extra when the current Office 2016 apps get replaced by an overhauled new version in the future. By default—though it's easy to change this—Microsoft's apps save documents in Microsoft OneDrive, a that normally keeps copies of your documents on your hard disk and in the cloud, so you can edit them with your desktop-based apps even when you're offline.

Microsoft—like Apple—makes it easy to edit and access your documents either online through a browser or locally through a desktop app, and it's one of Office's major advantages. Microsoft Office Alternatives If you're ready to switch from Microsoft Office—or if you simply want an alternative—you'll need to be prepared to deal with the inconvenience of using non-Microsoft document formats in an Office-centric world. The only document formats that everyone can handle are Microsoft's Word and Excel formats, and you can set up your non-Microsoft apps to save in those formats, but you'll typically need to swat away message boxes and other warnings when you do. If you only share documents within an organization that has standardized on non-Microsoft formats, this won't be an issue, but it will be an issue if you send documents to anyone outside.

With that in mind, here are some details on the alternatives: Google's apps include Docs, Sheets, Slides, all available from a menu that appears at the upper right of Google's home page when you're signed into any Google account. The same menu includes all of Google's free services such as GMail, Calendar, Contacts, and Google Drive.

If you sign up for the commercial G Suite version you also get voice and video conferencing and a variety of account management services; higher-priced subscriptions include auditing and data-retention features. All of Google's offerings exist only in the cloud, accessible via a web browser or mobile apps, not via desktop-based programs, and you can only edit your Google documents when you're online. The one partial exception is an offline browsing feature available through the browser, but only if you've already installed an offline-editing add-in for Chrome and only if you've already downloaded copies of the documents that you want to edit. If you lose internet access without planning ahead, you're out of luck.

LibreOffice, on the other hand, is a only desktop application, composed of a word processor called Writer, a spreadsheet called Calc, a presentation app called Impress, a vector-graphics app called Draw, a separate math module called Math, a separate charting module called Charts, and a database manager called Base. Unless your network administrator installs a special server-based version for users in your organization—not an easy task—you can only use LibreOffice by launching its desktop apps in, or Linux. You can't use it through a browser, and you can't use it through a mobile app. These limitations come with security advantages, and LibreOffice is the only up-to-date open-source office suite, which means you don't have to worry about what Google, Microsoft, or Apple might do with your data. Another advantage is that LibreOffice looks and feels a lot like older versions of Microsoft Office, before Microsoft replaced the old menu-and-toolbar interface with the Ribbon interface introduced with Office 2007. An important niche player is Corel's WordPerfect Office.

Its loyalists include many law offices, government agencies, academics, and me. WordPerfect Office exists only on the Windows platform, with no online version, and its Quattro Pro spreadsheet and Presentations graphics app are lackluster at best. But its heart is the powerful and unique WordPerfect word processor, the only current word-processing app that doesn't try to look and feel like Microsoft Word.

Unlike Word, which hides its formatting codes, WordPerfect's Reveal Codes feature makes it easy to see exactly why your document looks the way it does, making it easy to perform wholesale changes in formatting style that are almost impossible in Word. WordPerfect is also far more reliable than any other app in managing large documents and documents made up of smaller separate documents like chapters in a book.

It opens almost any legacy format, and can be set to save in Microsoft Word by default. You probably won't want it unless you already use it, but if you need it, nothing else takes its place What About Apple iWork? Why isn't iWork in the table above? Apple's office apps are marketed on Apple's website as iWork, but you won't find a suite of that name for sale; instead all of the pieces are sold individually. You have to buy them all separately and assemble the suite yourself. That said, the, Numbers spreadsheets apps, and Keynote presentation app are, to my mind, the most elegant and visually impressive office apps ever made.

However, they're not designed to play nice outside the Apple ecosystem. If you want to open an iWork document under Windows, Android, or Linux, you'll need to access it through a browser—and if you had revision-tracking turned on in your document, you may be annoyed to find that you can only view it, not edit it, in the browser interface.

Best Productivity Software For Mac Free

Apple's apps can export and import files in Microsoft's and LibreOffice's format, but there's no Windows or Linux app that can open iWork documents in their own format. Apple's elegance and simplicity may be enough to make up for this if you never step outside Appleland, and Numbers has the distinction of being the only current spreadsheet app that breaks the Excel mold by letting you create multiple tables on the same sheet. I admire Apple's apps, but, except for the visually spectacular, I'm reluctant to use them.

Which Office Suite Is Right for You? When you choose an office suite, are you choosing for yourself or your whole organization?

If you're choosing for yourself, use whatever feels most comfortable, but if you choose anything other than Microsoft Office, and you plan to send your files to anyone else, be prepared to set up your suite to export files in the standard Microsoft formats that almost everyone else expects. If you're choosing for a small business or a large organization, then matters get more complicated. Microsoft Office is the most effective and overall the most reliable and easiest to use of all the suites, but it has two disadvantages: the desktop apps cost significant money, and you may have strong reasons to avoid proprietary software. If you insist on open-source software, then LibreOffice is your only serious choice, but LibreOffice suffers from a clunky interface with menus that can confuse even expert users. If you want free software, and you only use a Mac, then you can use the free copies of Apple's apps that come with your machine. If you're content with cloud-only software, then Google's apps are powerful and intuitive. If you're in an industry or research field that uses WordPerfect, then Corel's suite is the only choice.

Microsoft Office and its subscription-based version in Office 365 clearly lead the field, but they're not for everyone. Unfortunately, there's no clear preference among the Office alternatives, but you can test all the alternatives—and Office itself—in free or trial versions. All the Office apps are mature, widely used, and heavily tested, and whichever one you choose, you can't go far wrong.

Pros: Free, powerful, online office apps accessible from Web browsers and portable devices. Visually elegant designs. Excellent feature set. Effortless collaboration with easy tracking of changes made by collaborators.

Exports in multiple formats. Cons: Offline editing requires installation of a browser plug-in for Chrome. Less powerful than desktop-based suites. Bottom Line: When it comes to online office suites, Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides has the best balance of speed and power, and the best collaboration features, too. It lacks a few features offered by Microsoft Office 365, but it's also faster to load and save in testing. Pros: World's most powerful office suite.

Upgraded with the smoothest collaboration features anywhere. Minimal interface changes from 2013 version. Monthly updates with new features for Office 365 subscribers. Consistent interface on all platforms, desktop and mobile. Cons: Little-used features that were awkward in past versions still aren't fixed.

Traditional standalone copies won't get the same updates that Office 365 subscribers will get automatically. Bottom Line: Microsoft Office remains the mightiest productivity suite you can get, with strong collaboration features added in the latest version. Users of Office 2013 won't need any retraining, and new features are slotted smoothly in with the old. Pros: Powerful, convenient cross-platform productivity suite with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other apps for Windows, OS X, iOS, Android, and browser-based versions. Real-time collaboration in Word and PowerPoint. 1TB online storage per user.

Cons: The mobile versions feel slightly underpowered in the latest tablets such as the iPad Pro. Bottom Line: Office 365 gets you the best productivity software available today, including full installations of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more, for up to five Windows and Mac desktops.

You also get a slew of mobile apps, 1TB of online storage, and real-time collaboration. Pros: Includes the powerful and elegant Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Simple site- and user-management features.

Works the same way on all current desktop and mobile platforms. Fine-tuned collaboration and revision-tracking features. Cons: No desktop apps. Offline editing is only possible in the Chrome browser and requires downloading files in advance. Less powerful than desktop-based apps. Bottom Line: G Suite offers most of the power and flexibility of its main office-suite rival, Microsoft Office 365. Its entirely cloud-based tools can be used from any desktop or mobile platform, but they lack the full power of desktop apps.

Pros: Delivers excellent control over formatting. Very stable, even with very long, complex documents.

Includes specialized legal features, ebook publishing, and PDF form creation. Offers effective import and export of Microsoft Office and legacy formats. Cons: Clunky, outdated interface. Spreadsheet and presentation apps trail Excel and PowerPoint in power and elegance. Bottom Line: WordPerfect Office X8 is a worthy upgrade to a venerable office suite, with new abilities and conveniences slotted into a familiar framework. Suitable for government and other security-conscious offices. The only desktop suite available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Can open and convert almost any legacy document or worksheet. Cons: Less stable and not as good-looking suites from Microsoft, Google, and Apple. Online collaboration requires manual installation by an IT expert on a corporate or office-based server. Some dialogs and options are cramped or incomprehensible. Bottom Line: LibreOffice is free and open-source, opens almost any legacy document, and is the only office suite available on all major desktop platforms. What it lacks is the smooth interface and stability of its paid competitors.

Flight Sim Games For Mac

The Best Flight Simulators For Mac Microsoft Flight Simulator for Mac isn't available but we've taken a look at the best flight simulators for Mac that bring you the most realistic flying experience possible on OS X in 2016 and 2017.

How we chose the best: Choosing best Simulation games is always fairly straightforward. You pick games that fare well in fields like animation, storyline/gameplay, and games that are most recommended among fans of the genre, and then you compare them.

However, we faced a few problems here since not all flight sims are available for all devices. So we decided to break up this list into PC flight sims, Android sims, and iOS simulators. We evaluated games that fit in multiple categories in all of them, so you can be certain no competition was left out. Here’s the only list you need to consult to choose a best Flight Simulator Games for yourself. PC Flight Simulators Reviews. 1.: Most Realistic Flight Simulator Type: Single Player / Multiplayer Microsoft Flight Simulator X came out in 2006, so it’s been over a decade for which this has ruled the charts when it comes to best flight sim games for PC. The game is a notch above its predecessor Microsoft Flight Simu 2004: A Century of Flight; there are great sceneries to explore flying a variety of aircraft.

The roar of the engines is realistic (comparing by 2006 standards, it is almost phenomenal). The weather effects are realistic when played with a good graphics card. The game requires you to complete missions which then yield rewards such as better aircraft, interesting new features and more. The shortcoming? You need to manage your Windows Updates with this one; the game has a reputation of being sensitive to new versions and updates. 2.: Best Flight Simulator For Window 10 Type: Single Player / Multiplayer X-Plane 11 stands out in its attention to detail. The smallest features of the plane’s controls have been rendered beautifully and believably.

The physical realism is just perfect. The sounds and graphics all take things to a new level. XPlane 11 is a relatively recent entry to the scene, but this newness comes off as freshness in a genre of PC gaming that is dominated by a game from over a decade ago.

The graphics and effects are a thing of beauty. The on-board instruments have been rendered in the most amazing detail, as have airports and sceneries.

3.: Best Plane Simulator Games. Type: Single Player only Another very recent entry to the scene is Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulating. Given the breathtaking physical realism and the cityscapes you can explore, it deserves to be among the top options for PC Flight Simulator 2019 games. The planes are amazing, the controls and toggles are very realistic, and the game is approachable for beginners too. Those with a keen eye will observe just how realistically different planes have been configured in the game, how they react to air resistance at different speeds and how easy it is to maneuver them.

The menu allows a lot of customisation too, though you certainly feel the presentation in the menus is a bit lacking versus a lot of other great options we’ve listed. Type: Single Player If you’re looking for an experience that is more militarily imagined, Falcon 4.0: Allied Force is a great option for PC and Mac users.

Despite being a game from 2005, it has graphics and gameplay that are breathtaking and exciting. You don’t need a lot of big features to fill up the screen when you’re playing a game that’s as fast-paced as Falcon 4.0.

The control board is almost the same as a standard military aircraft. The dogfights are pretty intense and thrilling. There is really no shortcoming to this game, which is why we’re certain this is the flight simulator game for PC and Mac users. 5. Flight Simulator Game to watch out for in 2019: Flight Sim World (Yet to be launched) Type: Single Player / Multiplayer Flight Sim World is expected to come out big and more refined by mid-2019.

The best flight games are available on a few platforms as part of Early Access. People weren’t big fans of how the game came out, but things have certainly bettered, with better optimisation, refined scenery and aircraft development picking up the pace. If things keep going at this pace, you can surely expect Flight Sim World to overtake present computer flight simulator giants.

It might fare inferior to other games at present, but having tracked the game’s progress and observing its zeal for refinement, I have no doubt that the game will soon be the most sought-after option in the foreseeable future. Ask a gamer how hard it’s to get over his cravings for more and more games, and probably, this is why he has emulators to be glad about. Through this post, we’ve got you some of the best GBA emulators for PC, 6.: Android Flight Simulators Flight simulator is the Airplane Simulator 2019. The game is posed less as an arcade-like RPG and more as a real-life simulator where you must listen closely to Air Traffic Control, maneuver your aircraft properly, and manage take-offs, flying, and landings in a myriad of situations and mission conditions. The graphics are poor at higher heights where you inevitably end up in your first few tries of the game. The advantage of an Android device is, of course, the gyrometer and other sensors which make your phone almost into a flight steer.

Different planes also change sensitivities and responses, giving a nice, believable physical realism. 7.: Flight Simulator The controls and animation are a little tacky in Flight Simulation: Fly Plane 3D. Don’t expect your phone screen to an Avatar-like 3D realism in animation; it’s more like the Jurassic Park cartoons, quite honestly. That said, don’t let these Road-Rash kinds of graphics dissuade you if you’re looking for a free flight gear that captures the essence of the aircraft; its sound, its responsiveness and more. The throttle and the steering are better displayed than a lot of PC based free flight simulator games, which is quite something.

The map and the radar are good as well, though they come underdressed. 8.: Heavy Duty Transport US Army Transport Plane: Heavy Duty Transport is best flight sim games for pc free download, though it is more concerned with big airplanes that are usually used by the army to transport soldiers and materials, with an equal involvement of road-based simulations like truck driving and more. The animation is a bit rough around the edges, but that’s all you can expect from a game this tiny in size. Also, you can be sure the missions you undertake are challenging; the flight game for pc does truly live up to the association the name puts with the US Army. A little bit of refinement in the animation is all this game needs to be the unchallengeable boss of the arena.

You can said this iOS Flight Simulators 9. Sky Gamblers Rise of Glory is an excellent amalgamation of the flight sim genre and the regular arcade fun that makes anyone born in the 80s and 90s nostalgic. There are intense aerial fights complete with bullets and bombs. The planes are all WWI style too, for a neat bit of personality in the game. Aside from all that, the shooting, the speed dial, and the altitude dial are all well arranged, and yes, designed like a dial on a WWI plane. The animation is beautiful and the action carries a lot of thrill. And for a change, the game developers didn’t make crazy storylines to fit missions into something of a plot.

Things are realistic, you can make your own mission or just play the 100 preloaded missions. Also, I highly recommend checking out the Ilya Bomber because of how fun it is. Psychology says, the reason we are more attracted to dark and gory things is that we like the idea of going through the entire experience (virtually, of course) and emerge victorious. The ego stroke is immense and it quenches, 10. If you’re a cockpit fan, X-Plane 10 is best combat flight simulator won’t disappoint you.

If you cannot do without good graphics, X-Plane 10 is great. Along with all of that, X-Plane’s tutorials are objectively better than its competitors.

Playing the game, one is certainly impressed by the sceneries and the animation the game carries, and the 24 challenges are certainly addictive. The combat missions are fast paced, and the emergency missions are harder than you expect them to be. The down sides? You need to purchase advanced aircraft using real money.

The scenery regions are fewer too, restricted to Oahu, Grand Canyon, Seattle, Alaska, and Austria. There are many other flying games that offer many more regions to explore in simulations.

Nevertheless, it’s a great game to play to kill time as well as have a realistic idea of cockpits and aircrafts. While the X Plane 11 fares well for PC games, X Plane 10 is the flight simulator for Mac. An important parting note: It is important to remember that not all games are meant to train or practice flying aircrafts. Most apps and games in the genre are meant for entertainment. Nothing beats a flight school if you’re looking to learn how to fly an aircraft in real time since they’re better equipped to teach you how to react to different situations both in terms of material resources as well as expert human trainers. Nevertheless, almost all these flying simulator games can be convenient ways to familiarise oneself with the broad basics, and they’re certainly entertaining.

Give them a try and tell us what you think the best Flight Simulator games 2019 is.
